Even though it’s the next hole on the course that everyone talks about (rightly so), the 17th at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head is one of my favorite par 3’s. Particularly when played late in the day into the setting sun, it makes for a fantastic penultimate golf hole. I’ve heard that Pete Dye likes to make one of more of his closing holes play westwardly so that PGA players attempting to close out a victory have to contend with the blinding sun. I’m not sure if this is true or not, but it sounds like something Pete Dye would do. Any opportunity to get in the heads of tour players is an opportunity he’ll take.
